Skin Conditions

Skin Conditions; Alternative Wellbeing Support

Skin problems can be uncomfortable, frustrating and sometimes difficult to understand. Changes in the skin can affect confidence and everyday wellbeing, particularly when symptoms are persistent or keep returning.

Skin symptoms can include dryness, itching, redness, irritation, flaking, spots, rashes or changes in the appearance of the skin. There are many possible causes, and similar symptoms can occur with very different conditions.

At The Boughton Clinic, we offer complementary wellbeing consultations for people who would like to discuss their individual experiences and explore lifestyle and general wellbeing factors that may be relevant to them.

Our service is complementary and does not replace medical assessment or dermatological care.

Common Skin Concerns

There are many different types of skin condition. Some are short-lived, while others can be ongoing and require continuing management.

Common skin concerns include:

  • dry or itchy skin
  • eczema and dermatitis
  • psoriasis
  • acne and blemishes
  • rashes
  • sensitive or reactive skin
  • scalp and skin irritation
  • changes in skin texture or appearance

Conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can cause itching, dryness and inflammation, but they require different approaches to management. A healthcare professional can assess your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment. (nhs.uk)

It is therefore important not to assume that a particular skin symptom has one specific cause.

Understanding Your Skin

Skin health can be influenced by a variety of factors, including the environment, skincare products, stress, lifestyle, underlying health conditions and prescribed or over-the-counter medicines.

During a wellbeing consultation, we may discuss areas such as:

  • your general lifestyle and daily routine
  • skincare products and habits
  • sleep and rest
  • stress and relaxation
  • diet and general wellbeing
  • environmental factors
  • when you notice changes in your symptoms
  • your individual wellbeing goals

Keeping a simple record of symptoms can sometimes help you identify patterns that are useful to discuss with your GP or another appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Our role is to provide a complementary wellbeing perspective rather than diagnose a skin disease or determine its medical cause.

When Should a Skin Problem Be Medically Assessed?

Some skin conditions can be managed with self-care or advice from a pharmacist, but persistent, worsening or unexplained symptoms should be assessed appropriately.

Speak with your GP if a skin problem:

  • does not improve or keeps returning
  • is affecting your everyday life
  • is painful, very itchy or becoming worse
  • is accompanied by swelling, bleeding, discharge or other unusual symptoms
  • involves a new rash, lump or skin change that concerns you
  • has not responded to appropriate self-care

Persistent itching, for example, can have many possible causes, including skin conditions, allergic reactions and, less commonly, other medical conditions. NHS guidance advises seeking medical advice when itching is severe, persistent, recurrent or affecting daily life. (nhs.uk)

If you have a diagnosed skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis and your current treatment is not helping, speak with your GP or treating healthcare professional. Medical treatments are available to manage many chronic skin conditions. (nhs.uk)

Skin & Wellbeing Consultation

£115

90-minute consultation

Your appointment may include:

  • discussion of your skin and general wellbeing
  • lifestyle and wellbeing review
  • complementary bio-energetic screening
  • personalised wellbeing discussion
  • complementary remedies where appropriate

This is a complementary wellbeing service and not a medical diagnostic or dermatology appointment.

If you have a persistent, unexplained or concerning skin problem, we recommend seeking appropriate advice from your GP, pharmacist, dermatologist or another suitably qualified healthcare professional.

Alternative Wellbeing Support

At The Boughton Clinic, our consultations provide time to discuss your individual experience and general wellbeing in a supportive setting.

Depending on your circumstances, we may explore practical lifestyle and wellbeing considerations that could complement the care you receive elsewhere.

Examples might include discussing:

  • general lifestyle habits
  • sleep and recovery
  • stress management
  • skincare routines
  • environmental factors
  • nutrition and general wellbeing

We do not promise that these approaches will resolve a particular skin condition, and we do not claim that complementary therapies can cure eczema, psoriasis, acne, dermatitis, infections or other medical skin conditions.

If you have been diagnosed with a skin condition, we recommend continuing to follow the treatment and advice provided by your GP, dermatologist, pharmacist or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Bio-Energetic Wellness Screening

The clinic may offer bio-energetic screening as part of a complementary wellbeing consultation.

This screening is not a clinically validated diagnostic test for skin conditions, allergies, infections, nutritional deficiencies or other medical conditions.

It should not be used to diagnose eczema, psoriasis, acne, dermatitis or any other condition, identify the medical cause of a rash, or determine whether a particular food or environmental factor is responsible for skin symptoms.

Where screening is used, the results are intended as information for discussion within the wider wellbeing consultation rather than as a medical diagnosis.

We believe it is important that clients understand the distinction between complementary wellbeing services and clinically validated medical investigations.

Complementary Remedies

Where appropriate and requested, complementary remedies, including homeopathic remedies, may be discussed as part of your wellbeing consultation.

We do not claim that homeopathy or complementary remedies can cure or medically treat skin conditions.

Complementary approaches should not replace prescribed medicines, medical investigations, dermatological treatment or other healthcare recommended by a qualified professional.

If you are using prescribed medication or receiving treatment for a skin condition, speak with your healthcare professional before making changes to your treatment.

Skin Changes and Possible Skin Cancer

A complementary wellness consultation should never be used instead of medical assessment for a new or changing skin lesion.

If you notice a mole or other skin mark that is changing in size, shape or colour, is bleeding, does not heal, or otherwise concerns you, seek assessment from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

We do not provide skin-cancer screening or diagnosis, and bio-energetic screening should not be used to assess whether a skin lesion is benign or malignant.

If there is uncertainty about a skin lesion, appropriate medical assessment is the safest course of action.

When to Seek Urgent Help

Some skin problems require prompt medical attention.

Seek urgent medical advice if a rash is rapidly worsening, painful, blistering, associated with a high temperature or making you feel generally unwell. These can sometimes be signs of infection or another condition requiring medical treatment. (nhs.uk)

If you develop a severe or rapidly spreading skin reaction, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, seek emergency medical help.
